Jens Lekman: Live Swedish SVT1 (TV appearance)

December 2, 2008 by captainrambo

You’re so silent, Jens. Live from Inkonst in Malmö, broadcast on the Swedish TV show Musikbyrån. This is a track ripped from a video floating around in the right places. More to come, this is a beautiful live recording.

For this song, Jens Lekman walked down from the stage, brought a baby guitar along and sang the tune in a circle of adoring girls, got the guys to snap their fingers to the beat.

Stephen Merritt: You Love to Fail (Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, 2008)

“You love to fail, that’s all you love”. Same show as posted earlier, I’m digging the completely reverent silence of the audience, the simple get-up of accordion & ukulele. From the man who has said: “I can usually sing along with Gene Martin an octave down”, that ought to give you an idea, ridiculously deep & dark.

Madrugada: Venus in Furs (VU Cover, Live in Berlin)

December 2, 2008 by captainrambo

Darkness at noon. Exterminate all the brutes! This is a terrifying cover by Norwegian band Madrugada. More brutal than any version I’ve ever heard by VU, droning and etc. Lifted off the “Another point of VU” series, a bunch of bootleg covers by bands playing Velvet Underground songs. This one’s from volume 39 (Jesus!). Thanks to Per!

Of Montreal: 3 songs from the Wonder Ballroom (Portland, Oregon)

This is a tight bootleg, sharp sound. Vocals are a little off-key at times. Whacky cool band. Don’t like their new album, thankfully these are all from the old records. Ultra hip rendition of “I was never young”, ooh! Thanks to yltfan for recording this thang.

Of Montreal: 7 February 2007, Wonder Ballroom, Portland, Oregon.

“No one wants to dance, they’re outside smoking cigarettes.” – brilliant.

Stephen Merritt: When You’re Old and Lonely (Herbst Theatre, San Francisco, 2008)

December 1, 2008 by captainrambo

Stephen Merritt of Magnetic Fields, 6ths and Future Bible Heroes fame pulls off a nice rendition of this track on ukulele, with Daniel Handler on the accordion. From the good fella who went to all the trouble of recording this at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco on 11 September 2008: “I had to bring the volume up on this recording quite a bit, as well as drop the volume of the applause sections to make it listenable. Obviously, this wasn’t Motorhead, so the music sections of this performance weren’t very loud.”

Lou Reed: White Light, White Heat (Werchter Festival, Belgium, 1984)

December 1, 2008 by captainrambo

A bit of a big festival feel to this track, cheesy 80s screeching electric guitars & piano plonking, entertainer-style vocals from angry man Reed in the skin tight jeans. This guy never gets sick of playing White Light, White Heat, nifty. Does an introduction routine of the band towards the end of the track.

Thanks to the guy who ripped this off an old fuji tape. The song is from the Werchter Festival in Belgium, July 8th, 1984.

Sigur Rós: Hoppipolla (Reykjavik Show, June 2008)

November 30, 2008 by captainrambo

I was at this actual gig, a beautiful day spent hung-over and grilling at the apartment of a friend of a friend with lots of great food – then hop over to the open park area where both Sigur Rós and Björk played (even sharing the stage at one point). Anyway, this is a recording ripped off an FM broadcast on Italian radio, all the other songs have a terribly frustrating Italian voice-over radio DJ woman talking incessantly, but “Hoppipolla” off one of their earlier albums was thankfully pure and unadulterated by the Romans (until the end, but you can cut that off yourself, if you are so inclined).

The song title means something like “jumping puddle”, from what I can gather from my basic knowledge of Icelandic.

Damien Jurado: Tragedy (Malmö, Sweden)

November 30, 2008 by captainrambo

A voice as brittle as glass and a face for angels. Recording not bad at all, a little audience noise, that’s all. If there’s interest, I’ll post more from his European tour from this autumn. Played with Tiny Vipers from Seattle all along the tour, but I couldn’t find any recordings from their part of the gig. Thanks to whoever stuck it out with a mic for the night.

Of Montreal: Nowhere Man (Beatles Cover/Radio Studio)

November 30, 2008 by captainrambo

Ah glittering radiant vocalist of Montreal, Kevin something-or-the-other, and a great fan of Norway (or hater really), you can walk down the streets of Oslo and actually hear Kevin singing in some of the windows. This is, in any event, a radio recording from Austin, Texas at the KUT 1 Studio. Date: 13 November 2008. Bunch of John Lennon covers, stupid radio dj talk, I cut all of that stuff away to give you this thing, a somewhat (admittedly) ratty version of Nowhere Man, really for comic effect or relief on rainy Sunday afternoons.
